There was something about her that I couldn’t quite grasp.  She had an air of mystery and such a mischievous look in her eye that I felt I just had to get closer to her.  The dance floor was crowded and I waded through the sea of people, casually standing a couple metres away from her.  I observed her as she talked to a couple people I assumed were her friends.  Her dimpled, tooth filled smile seemed to brighten the room, at least from my perspective, and her red and blonde hair shone brightly under the flashing florescent lights.

Her hair was long, falling in careless waves over her shoulders and part way down her back.  From what I could hear, her voice was deep and husky, and she laughed loudly; sometimes her hand would cover her mouth in what appeared to be modesty.  I wondered if she had a shy side, although in that sort of environment it was hard to tell what anyone was really like.  All I could do was observe from a distance and watch her curvy frame walk to the bar.

I went up to the bar also and ordered a drink, trying to be subtle in my observations.  My eyes dipped down to look at her figure hugging singlet; it was some heavy metal band that I didn’t know of.  The jeans she wore were long and black and a little loose, being held up by a shiny, studded belt.  My eyes travelled further down to see her shoes, which were black boots, but I couldn’t see much of them under the jeans.

The bar staff placed my glass of bourbon onto the counter in front of me, startling me and making me look away from my mysterious red head.  After I had picked up my drink, took a sip and looked back to where she had been standing, I couldn’t see her; she had gone.  I felt my spirits drop as my eyes searched frantically in the crowd, trying to spot her shimmering hair.  Then there was a noise behind me, the sound of someone clearing their throat.  I felt her presence before I saw her, her lips wrapped around a straw as she sipped her drink.  Her blue eyes looked at me expectantly and she raised a thin eyebrow.  There was a smirk on her red lips when she moved the drink away from her mouth.

My goofy smile and shy wave made her giggle and she asked if I was having a good night.  I replied by saying, ‘I am now,’ and took a sip of my bourbon as I made eye contact with her.  After a moment she looked down into her own drink and fiddled nervously with the straw.  I liked the cute, shy expression she had on her face for that brief second.  My eyes lowered intermittently while we chatted about random things, as to avoid staring at her face and I found myself looking at the small bit of cleavage poking over the top of her singlet top.  Heat moved through me and settled into my cheeks and my groin.  She must have noticed where my gaze lingered and giggled.  I laughed bashfully and she asked me my name.  ‘Kara, my name is Kara,’ I told her and smiled.
An assignment for my creative writing studies.
